It appears that this will may have been typed with the included words as they appeared in the original document. Some misspellings may also occur because of typographical errors. Whatever the case, there is a wealth of information included in this document, ie.: departure and arrival dates, the ship's name, departure and arrival ports, birth and death information, names and ages of children who accomnanied him, etc.

"Thomas Sherwood, born in Sherwood Forest, Nottingham, England,1586, died Fairfield, Connecticut, 1655. He sailed from Ipswich, April 21,1634, in the good ship "Francis", John Cutting, master, and landed in Boston, Massachusetts, in June of the same year, accompanied by his wife Alice, born1587, and four children: Ann, born 1620; Rose, 1623,; Thomas, 1624; Rebecca,1625. He settled first at Wethersfield, where his name appears on the second list of settlers other than those from Watertown. He settled in Fairfield as early as 1643, when his name appears on the Stamford land records. He served as deputy with Roger Ludlow in the general court, 1650. He brought with him to Fairfield his second wife, Mary -----, by whom he had six more children. His will is dated July 21, 1655, and proved October 26, 1655."

They came to Wetherfield with the first settlers, 1635, was a carpenter, and sold his lands to George Wyllys, 25 Mar. 1640. He removed to Stamford, where he lived until 1648, when he sold to John Holly, and settled on Fairfield. He may have been related to Thomas Morehouse, whose holdings adjoined his in Wethersfield, and accompanied him in his subsequence migrations." If the age of the son Thomas was misstated on the ship's list, he could have been the Thomas, son Thomas and Alice baptized at St. Michael's London, England, 23 Jan. 1630."

Sherwood and his Paternal Ancestors," by Andrew Sherwood (Ryder Printing Co.,Portland, OR, 1929). Sherwood's source is the Fairfield, CT Probate Records, Liber 1, Folio 109-11. A copy of the will is also referred to in Town Records of Stamford, CT, Book A, p.50. Only copies are know to be in existence.

!"Imprimis. I give and beqeath unto the children of my first wife. I beqeath to my son Thomas five acres of upland lying upon the north end of Sasqua (aka Sasco) Neck, and is to have it on that side next the... I beqeath to my daughter Jane twenty Shillings. I beqeath to my daughter Tamsen twenty Shillings. I beqeath to my daughter Mary twenty Shillings. I beqeath to my daughter Sarah twenty Shillings. I beqeath to my daughter Hanna twenty Shillings. I beqeath to my daughter Rose twenty Shillings. I beqeath to my daughter Rebecca forty Shillings. I will that the above named legasies be payd within one year after my decease. I will and beqeath to my beloved wife Mary Sherwood whom I make my executor and executrix of this my last will who shall pay the aboved named legasies. And also the legasies underwritten.

As to my son Steven Sherwood I beqeath my dwelling house and home lot with all the buildings on this home lot and all the lot that layd next to my home lot on which I now live except half an acre, which is to lie to the house, and I give him all that meadow that lieth in the great meadow that I bought from Daniel Frost, and two acres of land in the old field, and six acres of land in Sasqua Neck on the north end of the hill. He is to have it on that side of the wood next to Francie Purdie's.

I will and beqeath to my son Matthew all my upland and meadow lying on the other side of Uncawy Creek namely on the east side of the said creek.

I will and beqeath to my daughter Mary ten pounds

I will and beqeath to my daughter Ruth ten pounds.

I will and beqeath to my daughter Abigail ten pounds.

I will and beqeath to my son Isaak that dwelling house next to my dwelling house that I now live in. And also I give him with the building on that home lot on which it standeth and he is to have the said half acre of land square off from the front the whole wideness of the lot and so(m)e downward.

I will and beqeath to my loving and beloved wife Mary Sherwood all the estate undivided whom I make mine executor of this my last will Excepting a mare colt which my son Isaak shall have and that to his use and profit presently

I will that my son Steven have his portion when he is twenty years of age. And also that Matthew shall have his portion when he is twenty years old.

And my son Isaak shall have four acres of meadow in the great meadow which I bought of Peter Merritt (or Maycock? Morock?) and five acres in the new field which he is to have at twenty years of age.

To Mary, Abigail and Ruth which I had by my last wife, etc.,etc.

And I desire my well beloved friends Thomas Staples and NathanGold to be overseers of this my last will. Signed in the presence and Witnesses of us this twenty first day of July 1655.
